I'm writing this blog post as much for me, I know I am awful at blogging regularly and tend to take a week out here and there. I'm trying to blog more often though and these guidelines are ones that I've set myself to try and improve how regularly I blog.
1. Set out what sort of topics I want to include on my blog. I don't want to be too restrictive with this, but I just want to have a basic idea of what my blog is about. I tend to focus my blog on four main areas: Fashion, My Life, Beauty and Recipes. I tried to set out basic ideas of what my blog posts should be about because I find it gives me inspiration. I also pick out what posts I like from other blogs and try to include something similar on mine. Sitting there trying to think of a post off the top of my head means that I'll just come up with something that my heart and interest isn't in.
2. Keep a notebook. Honestly, when someone ever mentioned that they had a calender or a notebook with post ideas I thought they were taking blogging too seriously. However, do you ever get that annoying feeling when you're in front of the computer wondering what to post? I usually have ideas for posts buzzing around my head and yet I actually post less than half of them. I'm trying to put all my ideas in a notebook now. I don't keep a schedule of when I should post a certain thing though, as I usually post what I feel in the mood to, rather than 'I shall post this because it's this day', as I feel that's too restricting (for me at least).
3. Plan in advance. I've never been the most organised of people, but if you knew how busy I can be you'd wonder how I have time to blog at all, and I'm sure it's the same for all of you who work! I work full time and my social life can be hectic at times. On top of that I am starting an OU course soon and taking on some design work. This means that in order to post I will have to do some planning. I usually write ideas in a notebook as soon as they come into my head and develop them whenever I want to post them.
4. Take photos in advance. This is near enough the same as plan in advance but I didn't want to waffle on in that point and then to overlook this. In the winter time when I get home it's usually dark, which I use as an excuse as to why I can't take photos etc as I prefer to take photos in natural light. I'm now taking photos for the week's blog posts over the weekend when I can use natural light.
5. Schedule in advance. When you are writing a post, at the bottom under post options there is an option to schedule your post for a particular date or time. I have used this feature before, but I've not really paid much attention to it recently. I really should though, it's a great feature to use for whenever I'll be particularly busy or away from the computer.
6. Don't overdo it. I find that if I spend my entire spare time blogging/thinking of posts/commenting on other blogs then after a few weeks I get burnt out and I take a week out. Now I'm trying to be active for less time per day, but without taking long breaks. However, if I want to take a break for a few days, I will.
7. But don't be away for too long. Sometimes when I've not posted for weeks and weeks, I lose my blogging mojo. It takes a few posts to get back into it and to be honest the ones straight after I return probably aren't my best. It seems strange as well but I seem to be more inspired and have more ideas for posts when I am blogging more regularly. I guess you just have to find a good balance between spending time on blog stuff and non blog stuff!
8. Use other social media sites wisely. You know, I signed up to pinterest ages ago but I didn't realise the true value of it until about a week ago. In fact it is largely what inspired me to write this post. I pin recipes to my boards, which hopefully I can try out and post on the blog. I also pin craft ideas, which maybe I might try out and share on this blog and you can see what a total failure I am at crafting.
9. Last but not least, have fun and don't worry about rules. I know this seems to contradict all the other points I made, but they were just helpful pointers, not hard and fast rules. I just don't want to conform to one thing or to feel forced into posting on a certain day. Blogging is meant to be fun and a hobby, not a chore.
Sorry for the long post today! I hope that you found some of these pointers helpful. I'm not an expert on motivating people, or blogging, but I just wanted to share some of the guidelines I'm trying to use to blog more regularly.
Some of you blog so regularly, how do you manage it? If you don't blog regularly, are you trying to get into more of a routine, or are you happy with how often you are posting? I'd be interested to hear other people's views on this.

This post is so helpful! :) I feel so uninspired/unmotivated sometimes and this has definitely come at the right time! Xx
ReplyDeletereally well written hun :) its great for people starting out and also great tips to make sure to note them for future reference!!

Great post, I try to post everyday where possible and I try to plane in advance if I know I am going away I try to pre write posts so I can publish them while i'm away.
ReplyDeleteI nneeeeddd to carry a notpad with me (somthing I don't do at the moment) there have been so many times when I see somthing and think 'Ooohhh that would make a great post' and never ever remember it!haha!

I love this post so much and I really related to it. I think for a new or old blogger the tips are really valuable. xoxo
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for writing this, I find meaning in each of your points especially point 6. The other week I spent all my spare time looking at the computer screen, (thats after a day at work doing it).
ReplyDeleteI realised this can't be right, its exhausting and my eyes are so sore. So I've condensed the time I spend on blogging into small pockets of time here and there. Don't get me wrong blogging is great but not at the expense of quality time with your loved ones and actually living your own life instead of keepng up with everyone else's, no matter how interesting they are!

I often sit in front of my laptop racking my brain searching for something to blog about too! I have started to plan what I am going to blo about in advance and find that it really helps. Another thing that I have tried is to write more than one post at a time. So if u have a day where I just don't have the motivation or energy to blog, I can just use one of my 'here's one I made earlier' posts. :)

Nice tips, thank you for this post :)
ReplyDeletePoint number 7 I seriously agree with.. this is my second blog, I was so in love with my first one but then for a couple of different reasons I stopped posting and didn't write anything for 6 months. I was just so uninspired, and had to start a new blog before i could get back into it!
ReplyDeleteAs for regular posting.. I have bursts of inspiration and can get some of my best work done when I have an hour free at work or when I'm watching sitcoms at the weekend. I usually end up writing a few posts at once when that happens, so I've really learnt to make friends with the schedule button! x
I love your thoughtful posts like this!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely keeping note of these tips. I actually already use the notebook idea. Haha, I felt like maybe I was taking it too far, but I'd get this brilliant idea for a post during school and forget about it later. Now I like to scribble it down really quick as soon as it pops into my mind.
Also, I definitely schedule my posts! Its just too crazy during the week to bother with outfit photos. Although I do try if I have the time to take pictures then. However, its usually over the weekend when I can have a friend take my photos for me.
Great advise here! Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for these pointers! I have a problem of backlogging, I'll have stuff lined up and by the time I get around to posting it, I've moved on to something else. Case and point.... according to my blog I'm still in the desert - in reality, my vacation ended weeks ago and I'm currently under PILES of snow. I need to get more meticulous.

All really good tips, Sarah!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips :) Definitely helps... I have the same type of schedule as you. Work, trying to get in to a masters program and social life... super hard to blog a daily/weekly post. Thanks for the post!

love your tips and advice! so great and definitely good for keeping up when life gets hard!
ReplyDeleteThe notebook thing is truly helpful. I scribble everything into my calendar, but I'm really lusting after a certain peach leather bound notebook on paperchose. Well, one step after another :)
ReplyDeleteThe time scheduling thing - does it actually work? Or does my computer have to be turned on? Cause I tried it yesterday (scheduled a post for midnight), but today it was still not posted. Ah, freak out! :D
once again a very well written post. sometimes I don't feel like reading long posts but your posts are always easy to read which is a very cool aspect ;)
ReplyDeletenow, when it comes to this topic I don't have rules. I also have a full time job which leaves me quite little spare time. usually I try to post at least once per week but sometimes twice. it all depends on the time factor actually.

Brilliant post Sarah! Yours are some of the only wordier posts I read all the way through and don't skim through! I know what you mean about scheduling posts.. I try to schedule but it has to be very flexible otherwise I feel boxed in! But it can be quite useful sometimes to see what posts you have planned out in front of you! xxx

oh Sarah this is a great post and oh so helpful, i usually plan posts in advance and save them as drafts this way i always have something to blog about, but sometimes when i look back at my drafts i don't like them anymore and i delete them.
ReplyDeletedoes this happen to you?
i liked the notebook idea no matter how extreme it may sound.
Well, I looove blogging and I always find some inspiration! :))

What great tips! I find after a few really good posts I don't have the energy to deliver such good ideas anymore. But then a sunny day will happen and a pretty salad will inspire me back at it! You are right, it has to be fun or else there's no point!

Excellent post Sarah! I do the same things. As topics enter my mind, I jot them down. I usually try to write for the week to stay current on things. I promised myself this year only 4 or 5 posts a week. It's time consuming, and enjoy reading other blogs MORE. It's important to write about what YOU want and the right readers will gravitate towards that. And do what FITS in your schedule.

This was really great post :) Blogging should be about things we love, of course. Also adore the idea of notebook; sometimes I have tons of ideas and somedays nothing. I should try to be more consistent. :)

Brilliant post! I usually try to post regularly, but no more than 3/4 posts a week - doing one every day would burn me out too much! Sometimes if I have a lot of free time and inspiration, I'll write some 'stock post' reviews, that I can save for times when I'm too busy to post. xx
ReplyDeleteAmazing post, love all the tips, they were so helpful! I have a notebook for ideas about blog posts, and usually i spend sunday making all my blog posts, and then post them throughout the week, so it doesnt take too much time! :) You inspired me to join pinterest, I think I will actually.

wow, this was really helpful!!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on blogging with us!!! I already do many of the things you wrote above but I'm very happy to know, that i'm not the only one who has thoughts about logging :D
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
ReplyDeleteI have a A4 calendar that lives by my laptop where I physically plan what is going up when. I then cross it off when it is written and scheduled. This means I can see where my gaps are, and if I need to move anything around. I also have a gap at the bottom where i bullet point posts that have no home yet, or aren't finsihed (like my cross stitch!)
I find this works well for me...I need something physical...not digital! :D
great post Sarah!! not making blogging a chore can be hard at times, especially when you think of it in terms of leaving x amount of comments/reading blogs etc it can be so time consuming! Great pointers anyway :) xxx
ReplyDelete‘3. Plan in advance.’
ReplyDeleteGood point, I tend to do a fair amount of mental planning. I hope it helps.;)
‘4. Take photos in advance.’
Agreed, but as with the UK, I live in an often overcast area, the Lower Mainland area of BC. It can be difficult getting outdoor photos with a lot of sun.
In my humble opinion, if documented, Google Images, and Trekearth are reasonable sources for images.
‘Some of you blog so regularly, how do you manage it?’
I plan one post per blog per month and will consider another if pageview and comment response is sufficient.
Happy Weekend, Sarah.
Lovely post, great to read somebody else's thoughts about blogging for a change. I agree on most of the things. Nevertheless I think it's easy to spot a blogger anywhere, since bloggers tend to be more observative than other people. I personally do not search for post subjects, they just come to me :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Sarah for the comment on my blog, glad you like the vintage postcard! :) How lovely that you do designs, it's a good idea to make a blog out of them! What kind of designs do you do?

You my dear, are the queen of blogging advice. Love this post - excellent tips, & something that I definitely needed to hear right about now! Between being sick with a cold, having a huge mountain of coursework to get done on a tight deadline, & the horrendous cold weather that I'm living in at the moment, my blogging mojo is not at it's prime. I haven't tried the scheduled post feature, but it's definitely something I should look into as I don't have a steady internet connection. Also agree with planning & photoshoot-ing ahead of time - such a huge help in the long run!

This is a great post! I try to use GCal and a notebook to jot down ideas and also make a note of events that are coming up that I might want to cover. I also try to keep up to date with my bloglovin feed and post a couple of times a week, but not limit myself as to when I do, except for Rock The Week on Sundays - it's a handy way to keep up to date with what I've been posting about, and also what I've been reading about! x

I loved reading this post, thank you so much for your tips! I often have periods where I'm very much in love with blogging, but a few weeks later I'll become annoyed with it, resulting in me often deleting a great number of my posts.
