MAC Hey Sailor! Highlight Powder in Crew - £21.50
I'm not usually one for buying limited edition and products from collections, as it just seems to me like an opportunity for companies to charge more for the same products that are just packaged differently. However I cannot resist a good highlighter, especially with summer quickly approaching.
Firstly, I do like the packaging. I love the nautical themed box and the angular stripes of both the highlighter and the box. Overall it still looks like a MAC product, but with a fun twist.
The highlighter consists of three striped segments, one pink, one peach and one lilac. In-between all the stripes the highlighter is a cream colour, although you can barely discern that from the one that I own, as the colours have mixed together. The powder is finely milled but I feel it could be a bit more pigmented; shown in the picture above is when it has been swatched heavily. The highlighter, according to the MAC website, is described as, "Soft peachy cream with fine shinner" (the spelling mistake is not mine). I wish I had read the description before buying. To me, a highlighter is a product that is pearlescent or iridescent to give a dewy glow to the face. As swatched, this is more of a peachy-pink colour with just the tiniest hint of shimmer that has gone virtually undetected by my camera. I think this would make a lovely blusher if it were slightly more pigmented, but I don't really think it works as a highlighter because it is just too pink.
Overall, I think this would make a really nice blusher, but not a highlighter. For skin tones darker than mine it might work, although it lacks the pearlescent or iridescent qualities most highlighters have. Applied anywhere other than my cheeks it makes me look like I am sunburnt, which surprisingly isn't too impossible in the UK at the moment.
Do you ever buy limited edition products or products from collections?

I can see what you mean about it looking like a blusher! I always expect highlighters to be a shimmery, pearly white colour! xo
ReplyDeleteoh that really sucks, but i do love how honest your reviews always are.
ReplyDeletei think that it's too peachy or sunburnt as you called it to use it as hightlighter unless someone has a very dark skin, but for fair skins like mine and yours it just doesn't work, i tried on in the store and it look horrible, as a blush it look decent but not pigmented exactly like you said. Did you order it? Couldn't you try it on you?
really missed your reviews and posts
hope that you are having a great time
missed you

(hope that you find time to check out my newest post as well)
I should have swatched it before buying I know, this product was just something that I was really excited about so I didn't. I had read reviews previously as well written by people who have a similar skintone to me who liked it, so I decided to blindly purchase it! xx
DeleteAfter reading your review, I m actually glad I didnt buy it!:-) I m very pale and this wouldnt work as a highlighter for me at all!:-)
ReplyDeleteThat cute color seems 2 be perfect 4 my skin. Great post dear! ;)

I generally don't buy limited edition products only because...I always arrive to late! this seems to be a very interesting one!

I was thinking about buying a highlighter from the Hey Sailor collection and now i'm pretty glad I didn't! Looks really pretty but i think a little impractical as a highlighter! Great review!

ReplyDeleteOh thats for the review
ReplyDeleteI am lookign for a new highlighter and your review is helping me steer clear of this one.
sometimes I buy into the limited edition stuff....but ive fallen in love with a colour or two that you cant get after and thats always annoying
Yeah, it's annoying when you see a review or whatever and the colour is absolutely gorgeous but it was a limited edition product from a few years ago! xx

I have mixed feelings about buying limited addition items. One being that I am prone to having anything I love become discontinued already. It almost feels like setting myself up to be sad if I love it. I've seen a lot of this line and it looks lovely! The colors are lovely too bad it didn't make for a good highlighter.

It's really pretty but you are night that it's more of a blush than a highlighter. I do get some of MAC's limited edition products and have really love some of them.

Great review post, as per usual! I do like the colour, however I can definitely see your point that it works more as a blusher. I'm not one to normally try out limited edition products; I like the well-reviewed standards as I find they often work the best :)

I've read a couple of reviews about this product and it seems everyone has come to the same conclusion that this is definitely not a highlighter and more of a blush. Still it seems like a great product.

NIce shade!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Though I agree, it definitely is a blusher, it really doesn't look like a highlighter! Very lovely blush colour though!

thanks for sharing!! I love reading reviews before buying things!
ReplyDeletemmm.. I guess I don't. I'm very selective when it comes to cosmetics. almost everything I use is from Clinique because for an example they have the only mascara I can use and it runs off with warm water. I also use their all about eyes gel and many other products.

I don't buy limited edition stuff either. I'm always afraid that I'd like them too much, and then they get discontinued. This blush is very pretty. And you are right. They would look good on darker skins.

I agree, this seems more like a blush than a highlighter, but it is a pretty shade of color :) So it isn't all too bad, but I wouldn't necessarily use it as a highlighter. I was curious with MAC's new nautical theme, but I'm glad I saw your review and the swatches first. lol "shinner"
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it's not just me that finds that funny :)! It's a gorgeous blusher but it shouldn't have been marketed as a highlighter. I have enough blushers already and probably wouldn't have bought it otherwise xx
DeleteI don't usually buy limited edition anything unless I am in love with it. I do love the packaging on this and I am a sucker for pretty packaging!

I would love to use that as a blush. The colors look fantastic. I'm a fan of that nautical box as well. I get easily sold on the packaging of items far too often. It's a weakness of mine. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't usually buy limited edition stuff. Sometimes, but not really in makeup areas because I'm afraid I'll really like it and then won't see it again ever. The last thing I want is my favorite lipstick or mascara to have been limited edition. Oh, that would eat me up if I couldn't have it again! ;)
i do have some urban decay, they came in small trial sizes & multiple colors of eyeliner, which i LOVE! i'm pretty sure it was limited edition. i wouldn't know how to use a highlighter. but honestly i don't even wear blush. sarah, i think of you as the rosy cheeked blush goddess.

Hmm, doesn't look much like a highlighter to me! I'm a sucker for pretty packaging, I really loved the Wonderwoman packaging from MAC but I agree that it's annoying when limited edition ranges are the same product but a greater cost. x
ReplyDeleteIt has amazing packaging, so eye catching!
ReplyDeleteI would have thought it was a blush at first! It totally looks like it. Lots of gorgeous colors and the pigmentation is amazing!

Hi there, love your blog, its so pretty! I need to invest in a new blush, I like the pinker colour on this one
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking of picking this up myself but I do think that the colour makes it more like a sheer blusher than a highlighter.

ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting highlighter color! I agree that it might be used more as a blush :)
