30 before 30

14 Jun 2012

It's my birthday today and I'm now 23 years old. People aren't lying when they say the older you get the faster time seems to go! Last night I was thinking about things I would like to achieve in my life and I thought that it would be fun to make a list here. Maybe in a few years time I will look back and cross some things off and set some new goals for myself.

I won't list all 30 goals in this post because otherwise it would be a huge post and I don't know if I even have 30 goals at the moment! It will probably be more like a mini series where I will post more goals over the coming years. I'm excited to see how many I will achieve!

Donate blood five times and get my Blue Donor Card. I already give blood but as I'm not a fan of needles it has to be a spontaneous decision otherwise I'm worrying about it for days beforehand. The time when the nurse put the needle straight through my vein didn't do much to help my fear, but to me, giving blood is an important thing to do so I try to put my fears to the back of my mind.

Buy a house. Most of the places I have rented have been pre-furnished and decorated and I just want to have my own home which I can decorate to my own tastes. I also want to put my money towards something which will eventually be mine, rather than paying for something that will never be my own.

Adopt an animal from a rescue shelter. I've wanted a pet since I was small but my parents wouldn't allow it and it isn't really possible to have one now whilst living in rented accommodation. I want to have my own place and have enough time for an animal before owning one.

Go travelling. I want to go on the type of trip where you just drop off the radar for a while and then come back with lots of interesting stories about hiking in Nepal, or bathing in hot springs in Iceland.

Finish my degree in Design and Innovation. When I was 18 and sorting out what to study at university, I chose a subject (Politics) which I hadn't researched simply because I thought it would be interesting. Whilst it was ok, it wasn't something I was majorly passionate about and I could never envisage myself in a career where the degree would be useful. However now I'm doing something I am passionate about and I really want to carry on with it.

More to come soon! Have you set yourself any goals that you would like to achieve in the coming years?

A huge happy birthday to Maiken who also celebrates her birthday today!

  3. happy happy birthday Sarah dear!!!! oh gosh you're so young... now at 31 i'm feeling so old really!!!

its good that you have this list, you still have time but having the idea of what's your plan for your future or things you still wanna do is beautiful.

i have accomplished many great things in my life but as getting older i feel more things to do...

so hopefully you'll make everything in this list at least before 30 :)

take care dear!!!! xoxo, Haus of Gala

  5. Happy Birthday! I hope you have a lovely day!

In terms of the 'list', it seems we are pretty similar, particularly on the pet, degree and house front. I absolutely cannot wait to get my own house and decorate it my way! (Although I realise how sad I may sound haha)

I'm 21 in a couple of months, so I think this is a really good idea. It gives me just over 9 years to complete my own list, anyway!
Good luck on getting all your 30 and, again, I hope you have an amazing birthday.

  6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! These are lovely goals, I'm registered to give blood but the first time I tried I got to the door of the blood place and burst into tears - so I know how difficult it can be if you're funny with needles! xx

  7. oh, thank you, Sarah! I hope you're having an amazing day! my day has been great btw :P
and I loved reading about your goals because it seems to me we are quite similar when it comes to goals in life. I have had some of your goals previously but I have achieved those already (degree in environmental technology, my own house with a quite big garden, a pet!!, travelling). of course I want to travel more and more! and in the future I want to be my own boss when it comes to working (this 8 till 5 thing is not for me). gosh, and I want to be able to clean the whole house, absolutely everything!! :D I actually love cleaning because I'm such a perfectionist.
anyway, I'm looking forward to reading about more of your goals ;)

    1. Sorry Becca! I didn't think it would be a problem until I looked over it when I published it. I didn't know at the time because it was my first time giving blood and I thought it was normal. However I bruised quite badly afterwards and after talking to another nurse she said that would probably be why. xx

  23. Firstly Happy Birthday. What a great list. Its weird as sometimes you have so many plans for life and then it never pans out the way you wanted. Sometimes for the better. I turn 28 this year and it scares the s**t out of me getting closer to 30 as I envisaged I would have a house, kids you know the usual. But you know what I would not change a thing. I do believe a lot of things happen for a reason. Take when I was 21 for instance if I had not taken a chance and got on a plane to Malia I would not be with my bf today.

  25. Happy Birthday Sarah! Your goals sounds fab, I was thinking of becoming a pet fosterer over summer because I love animals and want a pet soo bad! But it's quite hard for me to have a pet full time atm as I live away from home half of the year. I'm planning my travelling adventure after uni which is next year, I'm so nervous but I'm looking forward to just rocking up somewhere no one knows my name and having some new experiences I could never get here! Good luck with all your wonderful goals! Tilly x

I just want to sit in a dark room and suck my thumb most of the time. I pretty much have the same goals as you, travelling, house etc. I'm a blood donor too and would love to get my blue card but the past 2 times I've went back my blood sugar levels were not high enough for me to give blood those days it was so frustrating! Only like a few below the target line! Next time I'll have to have a powerful fry up or something beforehand!

‘Buy a house.’ That will be quite the goal. I suppose a lot depends on economics and where one lives, if one has one income or more etc.

‘Adopt an animal from a rescue shelter.’ Wonderful.

    ‘Go travelling.’ Total agreement.

  103. A very happy belated birthday to you! I love that you're going to give blood. I'm not allowed because I'm anemic and I really hate not being able to help out. I have a list that I just started as well, I think I'll contribute mine to a blog post of my own! Looking forward to seeing how your goals are coming along.

  106. So nice to read about you swapping from politics. I'm leaving uni to persue a different path of life and I'm super worried about it. However you saying you're enjoying your new course has made me feel soooo much better! Thank you! X
